Mallorca is made for riding on two wheels. From its steep mountain roads and legendary climbs to off-the-beaten-path trails, there is an exceptional variety of cycling experiences in Mallorca for riders of all levels.
For road cyclists, the Serra de Tramuntana is home to some of the island’s most iconic rides. In the south and inland, flatter roads provide a kinder alternative, passing through villages, vineyards, olive groves and the Mediterranean countryside.
Staying at The Donna Portals in Portals Nous puts you within easy reach of Mallorca’s best cycling routes. Whether you come with your own bike or prefer to rent one, the island offers plenty of ways to explore at your preferred pace.
Mallorca cycle routes for every kind of rider
One of Mallorca’s greatest strengths as a cycling destination is the variety of routes available. The island’s landscape changes dramatically over relatively short distances, meaning you can move, for instance, from the coast to the mountains in just one single ride.
The official cycling network in Mallorca includes 16 routes across the Serra de Tramuntana, the north, the centre and the south of Mallorca, with different distances and levels of difficulty. In total, there are around 1,732 km of cycling routes across Mallorca.
Mallorca’s best cycling routes
Whether you are looking for a challenging ascent or a quieter route through the countryside, Mallorca has a ride to suit you. The key is to pick one that matches your experience and the kind of landscape you want to explore.
Llogarets del Pla de Mallorca Route
89.5 km – Low difficulty
One of the gentler options is the Llogarets del Pla de Mallorca route. Starting from Platja de Palma, it heads inland along the Llucmajor road, which features a designated cycle lane, taking you away from the busier coastal areas and into a landscape of open countryside and rural villages.
It is a very appealing option for cyclists who want to cover some distance without tackling steeper climbs. The route is circular, returning to Platja de Palma.
Llogarets de Ponent Route
53 km – Low difficulty
One of the most accessible routes in the west of Mallorca, connecting the coast with several inland villages such as Calvià and Andratx.
It can be started and finished in Palmanova, just 15 minutes from Portals Nous, making it a particularly convenient option when staying at The Donna Portals. The return journey follows the coast at a gentler pace, passing through the ports of Andratx, Peguera and Santa Ponça.
Fars de Ponent Route
74.5 km – Medium difficulty
With around 1,377 metres of elevation gain, the Fars de Ponent route starts near Portals Nous and takes in several coastal locations, including views towards the Natural Park of Sa Dragonera, home to three historic lighthouses.
The route combines flatter stretches with several relatively easy mountain climbs, taking you through the outskirts of Palma and the towns of Andratx and Calvià. It can be started from several points along the route, making it a flexible option depending on where you are staying.
Far de Formentor Route
96 km – Medium difficulty
This route takes you to the spectacular Formentor Lighthouse, which is located on a cliff at the northern tip of Mallorca.
Starting in Alcúdia, it follows the coast towards Port de Pollença before heading towards the lighthouse along one of the island’s most scenic and spectacular roads. The route then returns to its starting point via Sa Pobla, creating a varied ride that combines sea and mountain views.
Ermites de Llevant Route
126.5 km – High difficulty
The northeast of Mallorca offers a quieter alternative to some of the island’s more famous cycling areas. Routes around Artà and the Serra de Llevant are a great choice for those wishing to explore a less familiar side of Mallorca.
The Ermites de Llevant route takes in two of the island’s most privileged viewpoints: the Ermita de Betlem, in Artà, and the Sant Salvador Sanctuary, in Felanitx. Starting in Cala Millor, the route passes through Son Servera and Artà before reaching Ermita de Betlem, with a small mountain pass along the way. Secondary roads then lead towards Manacor and Felanitx, from where the climb to Sant Salvador begins. The return journey goes through Porto Cristo, home to the famous Caves of Drach.
Serra de Tramuntana North Route
96 km – Very high difficulty
Only suitable for experienced cyclists, this route covers the iconic Sa Calobra road, one of the most famous cycling climbs in Europe.
Starting in Alcúdia, the route passes Pollença and continues towards Lluc, tackling a succession of mountain passes before the spectacular descent towards the Port de Sa Calobra. The return journey includes gradients of up to 14.6%, making it a demanding but rewarding challenge. For well-trained riders, this is undoubtedly one of the best cycling climbs in Mallorca.
Serra de Tramuntana South Route
126.5 km – Very high difficulty
Another demanding route through the Serra de Tramuntana, this ride starts in Palmanova, very close to Portals Nous, and features around 2,300 metres of elevation gain.
It crosses the southern part of the mountain range, tackling three significant mountain passes along the way. The roads are exceptionally beautiful, passing through villages such as Estellencs and Banyalbufar, with views of the Mediterranean throughout.
The route also passes through some of Mallorca’s most emblematic villages, including Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller. The return crosses the mountains via Coll de Sóller, with an incredible view of the island.
When is the best time for cycling in Mallorca?
Although Mallorca can be explored by bike all year, the cooler months are particularly attractive for longer rides and challenging climbs. According to the Consell de Mallorca, October to May is the best period for cycling in Mallorca.
Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming almond blossoms, while autumn offers quieter roads with the occasional downpour. Winter is a popular season for professional teams choosing the island for training.
Summer cycling is possible, requires more planning. The traffic can be heavy, and daytime temperatures regularly exceed 30°C (86°F), making it harder to tackle long routes and exposed climbs.
Before you go out for a ride, check the weather and route conditions, make sure to carry enough water and check if your equipment is suitable for the chosen distance and terrain.
